Each ply runs perpendicular to its adjacent ply, giving the core dimensional strength, thus called engineered. Like solid wood, the top surface of engineered hardwood floors is treated instead of underlined to increase its durability and performance. Those chemicals form a transparent layer on top of the wood surface called the wear layer.
